Fresh from college with a Bachelor in Engineering degree in Electronics & Telecommunication. At that moment I was very eager to join in the industry rather to continue for further higher study.
1988-1994
I joined in HCL-HP Ltd as a hardware engineer in the customer support division in Calcutta. The initial training was conducted in Dehradun, a beautiful hill-resort in Northern India. My journey began. Later I had to do extensive travelling in different parts of India.

HCL Ltd >> HCL-HP Ltd >>HCL Infosystems Ltd
HCLI's history dates back to 1976, when a computer company by the name Hindustan Computers Ltd was formed. It 1986, HRL, HIL & ICSCL were merged with it and the name was changed to HCL Ltd. To enable a focussed approach to computers and to have access to latest technology, it entered into a financial and technical collaboration with Hewlett Packard, USA. HP came into the scene on its acquisition of Apollo Computers Inc., HCL Ltd's erstwhile collaborator. HP acquired a 26% stake in the company and the name of the company was changed to HCL-HP Ltd. The collaboration with HP has ushered in a professional approach not only to manufacturing and marketing, but also to customer service and support. Growth since then has been driven by aggressive marketing, quality products and ability to redress customer complaints quickly.
Since 1991, when HCL and HP created their joint venture in India, HCL-HP has imported, manufactured, sold and supported the HP RISC/UNIX workstations and servers, growing HP's Indian market share to number one in both categories.
In July 97, HCL promoters bought back the 26% HP stake in HCL Hewlett-Packard Ltd (HCL HP) and the name was rechristened to HCL Infosystems Ltd.

My initial role in the company was of a support engineer. People quite often calls it a 'screw-driver technology'. At the beginning it was a challenge to understand the integral parts of a complicated system. The co-ordination between the Electro-mechanical devices often amazed me. How a plotter plots or how a laser printer prints is not less interesting than a Hollywood movie.
Gradually I find interest in the System Softwares and the Operating Systems. I started getting involved more and more in UNIX and other multiuser Operating Systems and switched to the CAD/CAM division. My sphere of work enhanced and with that the responsibility. Design packages like AutoCad, ANSYS and IDEAS provoked me to move fast towards the Software Field. I was looking for a change.
What did I learn all these years ? The first thing of course is the art of Customer Relationship, by giving attention and providing knowledge, service and most importantly confidence. Secondly, enhanced my knowledge of latest systems and technology and their usage. Coping with the stress was a daily experience.
During the time I worked in HCL-HP, my line of business was the Education Sector. I had the opportunity to work with some renowned professors and talented students in different fields. They are knowledgeable, respected and somehow attracted me to this noble profession.
1994-1997
It was long six years since I left college. When I use to see the students and the teachers doing research in their subjects, devoting their time in learning new things everyday, I started deviating from my current job. Towards the end of 1994, I quit my job and joined in a project in the Computer Science Department of Jadavpur University.
Me with Siuli Roy. She was great help for me.
Industry oriented ManPower with Appropriate Competence and Training
Project IMPACT also called Electronics Industry Development Project was successfully implemented by the Department of Electronics, Govt. of India jointly with the World Bank and the Swiss Agency for the Development & Cooperation (SDC), at 14 Engineering Colleges (Electronics & Computer Science Streams) and 12 Polytechnics (Electronic Stream). The pilot project has been acclaimed as highly successful for providing critical financial and technical inputs to the selected Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics for improvement of their learning environment and producing high quality engineering graduates and diploma holders. The project has also helped in filling up an important gap of providing advanced Continuing Engineering Education in the field of Electronics and Computers to engineers and managers working in the Electronics and Computer industries.
Jadavpur University was one of the Resource Centers in India.
PROJECT
The IMPACT Project was a real good impact for me. The Project required setup a robust environment with many advanced Computer Systems and its components. They wanted a dedicated experience person for the Network and Systems Administration. I was looking for a change and was trying to get involved in academic institutions. So I jumped in.
I was so pleased to start the job as a System Administrator of the project. We had a wide variety of operating systems in a complex network, which contains SUNOS, OSF from DEC (Digital), Novell Netware. Several nodes with windows were connected. The project was flooded with latest softwares, daabases like Oracle and Sybase, Multimedia systems, Visual basic and Powerbuilder and what not. Thanks to the project co-ordinator Prof. D. Ghosh Dastidar, I was given full authority to make the full use of the entire infrastructure. It gave me a chance to boost my knowledge in all these areas. After all it is a place to learn. During the time I was in IMPACT Project, I started my Masters in Computer Sc. from B.E. College. For few days, it reminded me about all those golden days we passed here. It was a tough call for me. I completed the 1st Semester. Juggling with family, work and study proved difficult for me and I had to abort with the hope that I would complete it sometime. I still regret for the decision. May be it was not a wise one.
Teaching was also a part of my job here. Other than guiding the students for their projects, I also had to take classes here under the Continuing Engineering Education Program (CEEP). I used to take classes on Unix Operating Systems and C/C++/Oracle. I realized that teaching others is one of the best ways of learning.
We also had evening classes with the collaboration of CMC Ltd

At some point time after two years, I started feeling that educational institutes are good for learning but may not be a good place to implement the new technologies. We have to go back to the industries with the knowledge and implement them. Unless you implement, the knowledge is not complete. I was trying to find an escape route and go back to the industry. This time to the software industry.

I joined one of best Software Company - Tata Consultancy Services - Asia's largest.

I am still with the company since April 1997. I visitied a number of places in the world working as a professional in TCS.
